Team Members…

Feel free to speak to any of our friendly team members during meetings and events.  Otherwise, you can contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Dr Dan Self
Chairman

I have a background in research science and education and became inspired by the heavens in my 20s with a 4 inch then an 8 inch telescope. A self confessed night owl who sometimes needs to just stand at the eyepiece and enjoy the positive power of observing the universe.

Keith Fowler
Treasurer / Membership

I’m a new recruit at Breckland Astro, though I’ve been staring at the sky since before it was cool. Galaxies are my thing—preferably the ones that require three telescopes, two cups of coffee, and a mild existential crisis to spot. If it’s bright and easy to see, I’m probably already bored.

John Copsey
Secretary

With his unmistakable Norfolk accent and easy-going charm, John Copsey keeps the Breckland Astronomical Society ticking as Secretary. A local through and through, he brings both warmth and organisation to meetings, making newcomers feel right at home. Whether sorting Society business or helping set up a scope under clear Breckland skies, John’s passion for astronomy is as down-to-earth as it is inspiring.

I have had a general interest in astronomy since my junior school days, looking to the skies and wondering what could be up there. I have been a member of various astronomy clubs since the late 1990s when I lived in London but moved to Norfolk in 2016 to a small village, Rockland All Saints, where the skies were so much darker, joining Breckland Astronomical Society in 2019.

My main interest now is in astro photography and I had my own observatory in the back garden; however, a move to West Norfolk in 2024 to a house with a much smaller garden meant I had to leave the observatory behind.

I am now experimenting with one of the new smart telescopes, of which there are several available on the market, with very good results and hope to demonstrate it at some of the visitor events.

Committee

My main interest in astronomy is astrophotography, and I enjoy experimenting with different techniques to capture and process images of the night sky. I also enjoy visual observing, especially through the society’s 20” telescope, which never fails to impress. I’m friendly and approachable, always happy to chat about astronomy - or just about anything else!

I’ve been interested in astronomy since the mid-80s when I used to do a lot of sea kayaking around Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Much was done at night, so learning about the stars helped me to navigate to the other islands, Herm and Sark. The deep, dark skies, with no light pollution, meant that I had some fabulous views of the sky.

I developed an interest in the Deep Sky and what is known as the Interstellar Medium, an interest that I still have today. Though I love anything astronomical, sometimes I just want to sit out under a really dark sky with a pair of binoculars and just see what I can see.

I'm Norfolk-born and raised. I got into astronomy initially when I was a child; it was because of my great-grandfather, but I stopped when he died. However, the fascination came back as I got older while trying to find something peaceful in life.

I love the fact that everything you see in the sky is looking at the past, and I am mesmerised by the sheer beauty and almost infinite variations of celestial objects there are, and by how stupendously vast the universe is and how small a part our planet plays in it.
